I need some help on finding insurance on our recently purchased 1951 Dickerson wooden boat. I am having a tremendous amount of trouble finding someone who insures classic wooden boats. We're in CA harbored at Fortman's Marina. I don't know much about boats myself. I bought this boat as a 40th birthday present for my husband who is serving overseas with the Army and it is his dream, but I am very unprepared for all that this is begining to entail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We have already tried Hagerty (who insures it now) and they turned us down because they say my husband doesn't have enough sailing experience. He went to school to build wooded boats 20 years ago and he has been sailing, off and on, since he was a teenager, but he has never been certified or anything like that so he downplayed his experience and now they won't continue the policy with us. I've called a number of other places and they all say the boat is too old to insure. Help!

We have lots of folks here who can help. I might suggest that it may be more a matter of your boat than your husband's experience. If so, a current survey will be invaluable. With that in hand, and an honest listing of experience, you should be in good shape. We use Allstate.
