JimmyParticipantHello everyone
Two weeks ago I stumbled a boat that has been calling my name since. It was by chance of course because I just finished bringing back to life a Catalina 27 and I am sailing it currently on the bay. Although I love my little Catalina it's not the boat that has found me in the dickerson 36 . I have agreed after a final walk through on sat a price of 2,800 . Before I go over the good and the bad and ask ur advice if I should run lill tell u a little about me . Sailing is not in my family but it's def in my blood somehow . I am relatively new to sailing compared to many but I do sail on a regular and love everything about it ! I am a self employed carpenter and love the idea of being able to put my heart and soul into something that comes from a local tradesmen ! I love the lines on this boat and defiantly get a different feel from her then I do from my mass produced Catalina. The boat was somebodies dream not to long ago before he gave it up and let the marina have it due to a long commute and finances. He was ailing it up to about four years ago and had the boat put on the hard for long overdue repairs. He started to bring the hull back to life and after walking it it seems sound. The boat does come with sails haven't laid them out yet though. The engine I think is a universal diesel I haven't attempted to see if it starts . The cabin has been left open so it's gonna need some love. The main areas of concern for me is the boat is de masted there seems to be okay rigging laying with it although there are no spreaders as far as I know yet . The cabin area has some serious rot and the deck has a lot of soft spots too . The area at the foot of the mast is horrible it seems to be the worst point . I am confident in my ability to perform the work needed and figure it out threw the process. I am just afraid the the romance of this old boat is polluting my rational lol. For some reason I don't want to pass this boat up! Has anyone around here taken on serious deck and cabin plywood and fiberglass work on one of these it there bearing points if I need to re ply the whole cabin . I know I just mentioned a lot and the final choice is only mine to make but am I crazy for doing this like my family and friends seem to think lol ? Any input and advice wud be great and if left to my own devices I will probably by the boat and take on the project lol.
Thanks for any advice that will be given

Irish MistKeymasterGood Morning Jimmy,
There are a number of Dickersonians who own wooden boats and some are better carpenders than others. I have a 35 wooden ketch Irish Mist and have owned it for 32 years. The fact that you are a carpenter helps a lot.
If you send me the name of the boat and contact information I will circulate it to owners of wooden boats who will be more than glad to load you up with good advice. In fact one owner may have a set of spreaders
Also we would love to have you join the Dickerson Owners Association so you can receive our new hot off the press Dirctory that gives contact information for over 100 owners plus a new yellow pages section on where you can buy parts and supplys
Looking forward to hearing from you

JimmyParticipantHey Joe
Sorry if I misspoke the boat is fiberglass but the plywood on the deck and cabin underneath the glass are pretty bad . It didn't appear to be cored though because it ply done below under neath the ceiling liner . She is nameless btw and I'm not sure if I can acquire it . But thanks for ur reply I make the final decision tomorrow morning wish me luck

Irish MistKeymasterHi Jimmy,
Thanks for your note. How are you making out with the Dickerson. Where is it located. We would like to include it in our Directory. Can you obtain the name of the present owner. Is it a boat yard. A boat yard has to get a title to the boat in Maryland State if it intends to destroy it.
Good Luck
Joe

Mike AitkenParticipantHi Jimmy….
I hope this is a “welcome” to Dickerson ownership……I have pretty much the same boat…a 36 footer, glass hull & fiberglass on wood – I'm fixing lots of the “issues” you mention….
There are various ways to do it all……If you have decent carpentry skills, it's all fixable – just takes some time, depending on the level of finish/construction you want.If you buy the boat…I'll try to give some insight..
There is another D-36 about an hour away from me….same situation…..
Best,

JimmyParticipantHello all
Mike I had a little change of plans after offering the boat yard owner what it was worth to me . I ended up buying a house instead of the Dickerson . But as fate would have it I stumbled across the number of the dickerson owner and gave him a call the boat is still rotting away and he is finally open to my offer . So here we go again another year later debating on whether or not I take on this daunting task .Jimmy
