On August 2, 1980, I purchased a Dickerson 35 from Hank and Helen Dodson on the Patuxent and sailed her with my family down the ICW to Miami. Put in a diesel to replace the Universal. My favorite boat ever, named “Talisman”. I don’t remember now if this was her original name or if I chose it. Sold her due to family circumstances around 1985 in Miami – and spent my time gardening. Retired to my home country Switzerland in 2000, then 2009 moved to Charlottesville VA (Lake Monticello) to live close to daughter and grandchildren. No gardening here in solid clay…Bought a Gig Harbor Melonseed 16’5″ for the lake which is great for rowing but there is no wind or room for sailing…I want to go sailing on the Chesapeake, most likely out of Fishing Bay on the Piankatank. Had looked until now for a suitable catboat but am always returning to my favorit memories of a strip-planked Dickerson. Could be smaller than 35′, but I’ve never seen one other than the 35’s and 36’s and 40′-41’s. I am presently looking at a very pretty “owner-less” boat (don’t kno its make) which I found in a boatyard, but don’t know if it will work out. Does anyone remember the Dodsons or the Talisman? Does anyone have a bright idea which way I should turn?

Welcome back “home” to your “Dickerson Family”. You should get some good conversation here. Over the past few years–I’ve tried to collate informatiion for the DOA and I’m certain that several forum members will chime in. In fact, your boat was “Talisman” when Hank and Helen sailed her to victory in the 1973 and 1975 annual races to become DOA Commodore those years.

In addition to Dickerson 35, 36, 37, 40-41s, and 50s–we know of 4 30s and 7 32s still actively sailing. Unfortunatley, there isn’t a stable of Dickersons for sale at the moment.

I predict that “Irish Mist” and “Rainbow” will join the conversatiion to talk about 35s and “Aequanimitas” will join to talk about the Piankatank.

We all highly recommend that you attend the annual Rendezvous in Oxford 18-19 June (info on this site).

    Cheers,

    Thanks Barry for your welcome

I’m truly happy to know that “my” Talisman had such an honorable past – I wish I knew what happened to her after leaving Miami! I’m afraid I’m not that familiar with your web page and -links. E.g. I don’t see if I did fill out a proper request for admission to this owners society, and I don’t know how to pay any dues. And lastly you mention that info on the Rendezvous in Oxford is “on this site” and can’t find that link. I’m grateful for your help!

    Hurst,

I think you have given us a “wake-up call”. Our web information does indeed need updating for 2010. Our membership committee will get right on that.

Information starts at the main home page http://dickersonowners.org/

From there you can navigate around and get a taste for our activities. The annual Rendezvous is a Friday/Saturday event over Fathers’ Day weekend in Oxford. Social Friday evening—“race” on Saturday morning, and social/dinner on Saturday evening. Many boats join for additional cruising before and/or after. In recent years, boats from New England, Maryland, Virginia, and returnees from the Caribbean have joined in. Please follow the links to stories and pictures.

Additionally, in the fall, some boats have participated in a “western shore round-up” with a similar agenda.

We’ll be getting a new “joining” form posted shortly and with “stagflation” I suspect your membership fee will remain a “very affordable” $25. For that, you will get “bragging rights”, a newly formulated member/boat directory, and great friendship.

OK, DOA members, let’s find Hurst a boat!

By the way, Barry, I’d signed up for the postings as “Hust” (no “r”) but my name is Hansueli (Hans for short) Steiner

    Hust,
Any time you want to take a trip down to Deltaville, let me know. I would like to meet you and show you my 36 (not for sale). If timing is right we may even be able to go out for a sail. I hope to have her ready to go within the next two weeks if all goes according to plan.

Isn’t there a Dickerson rule that states Dickerson vessels must always be ready? I think so.

    Hust,

From member Mike Aitken in New England—-

“I saw what may be wonderful value for a person looking for a Dickerson.. A Dickerson Ketch listed on Cape Cod (Massachusetts) Craigs list. Looks like a fiberglass 36 foot ketch (they are calling it a 35 – but the hull is glass)- aft cabin. Supposedly engine works, sails, rigging ect with the boat. Needs deck/cabin work. If it’s a glass boat it’s a darn good value for $2,000. Pictures are posted on CraigsList.
The phone # is 508-237-9852 & ask for Erin. Gee, wonder if there is room in my yard – a spare for IRIS?????? I’ll have to ask Una.”

Might be just what you are looking for :D

Thank you Bob S. for your invitation. I will gladly post when I am planning to come down to Deltaville the next time.
But aside of that not all news are happy news! I loved that 1964 Dickerson 35 in Canada, but the very day I wanted to call she had been sold for a measly 12,000 Canadian$!!! (By the way, you may want to take her off your list of boats for sale)After three years being advertised! Then I was very interested in the one Mike Aitken mentions, as I’ve built boats before and love wood working and fibreglassing. (Thank you very much Mike for mentioning her) But when I called Erin in Chatham, I found her to be totally out of it, wouldn’t give me any satisfactory answer to any of my questions including the one whether she had ever sailed the boat and she told me she’d never sell the boat to me and hung up on me…And then there was a couple of days later the one on Craig’s list in Palm Beach for $4,000, sounded more fantastic even with a brand new engine, supposedly in even better shape (I wondered if it might have been my Talisman) but again the next day she was gone as well. I’d love to see Bob’s 36. My ideal size would probably be a 32 (although I’ve never seen one) but a 35 (6) up to around $ 30,000 would of course be fantastic!

    Hi Hust…
I just saw this post…hope the “dickerson search” is moving forward. If I see a decent dickerson out ther I’ll let you know. Too bad on the boat in Chatham – that makes no sense to me….but funny how people are. I saw the photos & it looked pretty good to me. It has the same lines as my 36 (the clipper bow was the give-away) and looked to be all there….

    Hi, Hust,
Just found out, to my awesome, amazed delight, that my old much-beloved D35 aft cockpit ketch “Restless” is still alive, at least as of Sept. 13 of last year; a posting by ‘Bahama Don’ with followup posts confirmed that she had been bought by him. Apparently he was going to do some work on her and sell her- that was one fantastic boat. You can find those posts under his name in the general discussions… maybe you can find Restless!

Jim Carr at Oxford Boat (Yacht?) Sales is the man to see. If anyone knows of a boat for sale it would be Jim. He has been a good friend to our group and would certainly appreciate a call. Sometimes there are some for sale listed in Wooden Boat magazine.

Please stop by at the rendezvous.

    All the best,

Rainbow (who is breaking the rule and is not quite ready)

    Hust,
I posted another link in the “$2,000” Dickerson thread….a nice one on the Eastern Shore.
    Have Fun!
