When is everyone going to finish up their spring commissioning and go sailing? I’m working on my list and maybe, perhaps seeing the light at the end of the tunnel… At least a small glimmer of light.

    Hi Steve,

Working down our list as well. Re-bedded the chainplates and tuned up the standing rigging on Saturday. Still have bright work to do–but don’t we all? Plan to haul on 4 May–but we’re sailable now. Saturday’s weather forecast is bright sun and 80 degrees. Hmmmmmm.

In answer to your other post—really want to do some Back Bay/Mobjack Bay/Onancock mini-cruises this year. That said, our schedule is out of control until after the Annual Rendezvous (of course that is our #1 priority).

Have made arrangements with Peggy Cobb at Little Creek once again. Yard is pricey but it’s closer to home so I can more easily go get the tools/ladder/wax/Cetol/brushes/tape/sandpaper/whatever that I always seem to forget.

Assume you’ve already been up and are back in? If so, how did the hull polish/er work out?

Might commission Lil’ Lulu (the dink) this weekend. She’s never been wet since I built her last year.

I have not hauled out yet… figured I would postpone it until my little situation clears up. Other than that, the boat is pretty well ready to go. I think we are going to sail over to Salt Ponds Saturday and anchor out there for a fleet 30 blessing of the fleet function. We did get out for a sail this past Saturday… the winds started out so light we just went out for a motor. We did not even rig anything to sail. Once we cleared the Hampton River, we saw a few other boats sailing, if slow, so I decided to set sail. We wound up having a really good first sail of the season and upon our return, caught a 15 knot gust of wind and popped us up to 7.2 knots of boat speed. The old girl still has it. Wind was about 60 degrees off the bow. We are also planning on doing an overnight trip to Portsmouth… will tie up to the basin at the end of high street over the mother’s day weekend. There is another fleet 30 function and of course the Gosport Art show. Should be another fun weekend.

If Alan made it possible on the forum, this note would be in green font—green with jealousy. Last Saturday was fabulous. My next over slip mate made his 2009 maiden sail in his Pacific Seacraft 34 and came back in just grinnin”. My crew (Judy) is out of pocket this weekend, so can’t join you—but will do so soon. Give me a hail on 16 as you pass by.

And by the way—poppin’ 7.2 knots will make a few Oxford bound folks VERY nervous. It might make Irish Mist start looking for that “private breeze” really early over the line.

I guess I won’t even tell you about yesterday’s sail. A friend, Eric, and I went out in the 15-20 knots of wind with full sails and romped around the Hampton flats waters. We sailed down to the mouth of the Elizabeth River, tacked our way to the Naval Station, crossed over to the southern M&M tunnel and ripped back to Hampton Creek. We were sailing over 7 knots most of the time. We were really moving, and heeling over too.

It was nice to be in the flat and protected waters south of the HRBT. Kind of spoils you when the winds are honking.

Thanks for NOT telling me. :?

From Salt Ponds tomorrow, you will be able to enjoy the Langley AFB Airshow. I watched the F-22 practice and the T-Birds arrival show this afternoon. Weather should be glorious. I’ll be up on VHF.

OK all you readers. I witnessed it myself–Snoodle Time smoked by Old Point Comfort today easily outclassing every other boat in Hampton Roads. Handsome boat–handsome couple in the cockpit. Easily doing 7 knots on a broad reach.

Meanwhile. I got the laundry on the spars—could it be that we take a maiden 2009 sail tomorrow?????

Aequanimitas was launched at 9:00 this morning and is back in her slip on Healy Creek in Deltaville. We spent the rest of the day putting things away and cleaning the interior. Tomorrow will be more of the same as well as the sea trials for the newly installed Auto Pilot. Then it will be on to SAILING. The winds have really been good here on the Piankatank for the past few weeks and I figure once we head out to take advantage of them the will disapear. That’s sailing.

I know it feels good to be back in the water. I’ve managed to get some really nice trips in already…. this has been one of the best springs in a long time. Hopefully this is a good sign for a great sailing season for a change. Will most likely do the Wednesday night race on a neighbors boat. Steve

A successful 2009 sea trial this morning just in time to beat the thunderstorms and tornado watch. Now on the hard at Cobb’s Marina getting prepped for some “secret slime” bottom sauce. It’s an old Hooper’s Island family recipe–guaranteed to do whatever Irish Mist can do–just a half knot faster.

    Hi Guys,

Should be a interesting race since Commodores Dick and Karen Clarke are going to for the first time put out drop buoys to get a triagular course with a beat to windward and two reaches. As for Irish Mist I have my winning ladies crew all signed up. They will bring in addition to their sailing and cooking talen a guitar and rich songs. Secret is to keep boat out of water at least a week before race to dry it out. Hope you can join in the fun Snoodle Time.

    See you at Oxford
