JKF2361GuestHello all, I’m considering purchase of a Dickerson 37, cutter-rigged, for primarily off-shore sailing. The design and builder’s reputation are obviously outstanding. I am interested in personal or collective accounts of performance for extended offshore passage-making.
Thank you.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterAhoy John,
Welcome to the DOA forum. We have some experienced blue-water Dickerson sailors that will come up on the net shortly–I’m not one of them–however, I have sailed a D37 in the worst weather the Chesapeake can dish out. Tell us a bit more about your aspirations. For where/when are you bound–from where?

JKF2361GuestHi Barry,
I am planning on purchasing a boat this Winter/Spring (2010), sailing it extensively in Summer 2010, and then taking it to the Caribbean (Fall/Winter 2010); and probably to Hawaii in Spring 2011. That’s as far as I can see for now. My present boat (1987 Newport 33) is great: fast, nimble, simple (and available on Yachtworld). I’m looking for something a bit larger for my family and heavier for off shore sailing. I’m in Michigan and sail primarily on Lake Erie and Lake Huron.John

imagineParticipantJohn,
Karen and I have owned our 37 for just over 20 years, and have a little over 22,000 miles on her. We started in Chicago, did 4 of the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence out past Quebec to Prince Edward Island, and the East Coast from Nova Scotia to the Exumas in the Bahamas.
The majority of that has been coastal cruising and day sailing, but two of the Bahamas trips were “offshore” direct from Annapolis, out the mouth of the Chesapeake, and to the Abacos in the Northern Bahamas. Those trips were about 750 miles of offshore, and 6 to 8 days.
Great boat for what you are planning.

imagineParticipantJohn – If you would like to spend some time on the phone, always happy to talk with anyone interested in a Dickerson. I’ve got 20 years worth of pros and cons – glad to share. Send a note to the email address below, and we’ll figure out a time we can talk.

Al SampsonParticipantHello John,
We have been sailing a Dickerson, cutter rigged, 37 for 14 years. Two years ago I sailed it off short back to the Chessapeke from Rhode Island. The cutter rig is great to winward but not always great down wind in light air. When it blows the boat doesn’t care how much when we use only the stay sail and one reef in the main. I plan to return again this summer.Al
