Fleet CaptainKeymasterLooking for experienced advice–
The ample rainfall has highlighted the need for me to rebed the lexan (I think) in the two main of Crew Rest’s Bomar coachtop hatches.
I’m thnking that if I take my time, I can take a thin knife, get the old ones out without damage–polish–and rebed. Anybody done this? Am I correct? Any tips?
Thanks,

Rshel34ParticipantHi Barry,
I haven’t had that problem yet, but due to crazing I discussed replacement of the lenses with the Bomar reps at the boat show. They pretty much said what you mention as far as removal. They also recommended using their sealant for re-sealing. The rep implied that it wasn’t a difficult project.Good luck

Rshel34ParticipantP.S.
The Rep also said if water wasn’t leaking in thrui the crazing to just leave them alone.Bob

Al SampsonParticipantHi Barry,
Have you asked the mfgr. Pompanette Inc. pompanette.com, 603-826-4125?While mine have only leaked where they are attached to the boat. I am planning to try a lense cleaner/polish by 3M, $25, which is available at auto parts stores. Rich W. (Bell) says it works great, like new!

Fleet CaptainKeymasterThanks Bob and Al,
In my case, the crazing isn’t driving the project—it’s actually the seal around the lens. So, thanks for encouraging me. I’ll give the Bomar folks a call and dive in.

Al SampsonParticipantDickerson owners,
Yesterday I purchased a 3M lens restoration kit from my local auto parts store. I have three large overhead hatches and decided to try it on one of them…….Wow……..what a difference. It worked so well that I purchased a second kit on my way home and plan to do the two other hatches by next week.Al

OhanaGuestHi: Yes I had heard that this product does the same. I picked it up and will be trying it on the ports. As to the hatches, I used regular auto paste compound and it cleaned them right up.

OhanaGuestA buddy of mine located this company that will reglase / rebuild any port, I think for 180.00 per..
3 yr warranty on leaksMay be worth speaking to them. saw the work and it looks like new.. I think he did 6 or 8 ports for under 1200.00 including shipping.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterGood stuff all–thanks,
On Saturday, I cut out the sealant around the lens (that was easy)–the lens didn’t wnat to come out (I suspect some 3M 5200 on the flat surfaces where the lens meets to hatch and two braces. So I chickened out (not wanting to crack the lens), and resealed all around with BoatLife “SealLife” (I think). Don Casey describes that product as silcone with adhesion properties.
Supposed to rain tomorrow—I’ll see how it works. And I think I’ll stop by an auto shop for a restoration kit.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterTwo thumbs up!
Sealife sealant and Meguir plastic restoration kit are both winners. Almost time to go sailing with “Snoodle Time”. Isolated storms predicted for Saturday—hmmm.
Steve–will you be back in the water?

Snoodle TimeParticipantHope to be back in the water by this coming weekend.
