Irish MistKeymasterWhile in Longboat Key Sailing Squadron Club I asked an old salt how often he hauled his 25 ft sloop to paint the bottom. He said “every3 yrs” I said WoW no barnacles. He said “none. His secret. “Add 8 OZ of Cayne (red) peeper to a gallon of antifouling paint. I think I will try. Anything is woth it if I can beat Rainbow.

Mike AitkenParticipanthey Joe….
how about a little (lot?) of teflon in the paint!
I’ve heard the same thing over the years too….wonder if it’s a old wife’s tale……

Irish MistKeymasterMike–He was on his boat–said he uses it all the time–goes 3 yrs and no barnacles. Uses Albative paint–Worth a try!

Fleet CaptainKeymasterOh my,
You guys are brining out the “waterman” in my genes. There are a million of these “miracle tricks”. The “older version” of teflon was mashed bananas. And then there’s the crowd that recommended adding pesticides–that made the environmentalists REAL happy (not to mention the DNR in the “Peoples’ Republic”).
I seem to remember that Practical Sailor did an evaluation a few years ago and debunked them all. But —- the chance to beat “Rainbow” ??????

Rshel34ParticipantI have been using West Marines CPP Ablative paint for a number of years. So far it has been their cheaper paint. Bottom stays clean for as long as two years. When I haul out this spring the paint on the bottom will be three years old. My prop is another problem. I have to go under and clean the barnacles off every 6 weeks. Looks like Rainbow is wearing a larger Bulls eye this year.

Nauti LegalParticipantI used interlux micron 66, 3 coats, with no additives. Its been 1 year 9 months, Had a few barnacles on the bow at the waterline(5-6). Other than that the rest of the hull is fine. It seems to build up fast in this area due to being in the ICW 20+ miles north or south of any inlet. We dont get alot of water movement around here.

Rainbow1969ParticipantSeems like Rainbow has a target on her stern!
I buy the cheapest bottomkote and haul every year. 2 gallons is half the price of a gallon of the high tech stuff. I find I have a project every year so she is hauled regularly so i spend the money on other gadgets.

Al SampsonParticipantGentlemen,
Let’s not forget that the salt water/biology is different every where!
