TessannaParticipantIn the process of replacing the water heater on my 1981 37 C/C ketch. The only access is thru the cockpit locker. The opening is 15″. The dia of the existing water heater is 16 1/2″ which leads to believe this is the original and it was installed prior to the deck/hull mating. The existing heater is a 12 gal Stor-mor and externally appears brand new. Makes it hard to believe it is 30yrs old. Anyone know if this is what was used in 1981? I didn’t think Stor-mor has been in business that long. Also due to the opening I can only find a 6 gal that will fit. Looking at Rectangle vs. Round. Anyone have experience with rectangle heaters and their performance?

TessannaParticipantShould have proof read…. My bad. The actual name on the water heater is Super stor, not Stor mor.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterWill check make of our heater next time at “Crew Rest” (1984 37′ sloop) but know that it is 6 gal and rectangular. Plenty of capacity for 4 folks (who like nice hot showers and clean dishes).
Of course, “Cap’n Bligh” has been known to suggest that 1 or 2 crew take their showers while motoring in to the anchorage.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterOK—-“Crew Rest” has an Atlantic Marine Model T6E Stainless Steel Square Heater w/ Heat Exchanger. Atlantic Marine is in Richmond (804) 264-1169. They sell square and round 4-30 gal.

WindsongParticipantHi Gary,
You’ve probably already taken care of the water heater by now, but I just wanted to close the loop. The water heater was installed by Dick Young when he owned the boat. If I recall correctly, he told me about the installation and how he had to force the heater through the opening. I believe the outer case on the heater is plastic, and it would deform enough to go into the opening.

eryouParticipanttessanna – The water heater was installed in ’92 / ’93, sorry, can’t remember when. as I recall, when the heater was empty, the insulation on the sides crunched enough to let it go in.

JohnI’m totally agree with you man. You’r 100% good here that the outer case on the heater is plastic, and it would deform enough to go into the opening.
