Thought I’d post a new thread RE: Plans, since this has been asked before & a thred may make it easier to find in the forum.

It is my understanding that most of the Ernest Tucker drawings were given to the Calvert Musuem by his widow. I had a chance to go thru most of them 6-7 years ago when IRIS was stored at a boatyard (Spring Cove) in Solomons next to the Musuem prior to her trip north to New Hampshire. I do know that there were plans for the 35, 36 and 41 in the files. Pretty interesting stuff….pencil on velum all hand drawn. Not sure about the older, non Tucker drawings. Someone else will hopefully chime in.

The Calvert Musuem Xeroxed (31″ x 31″) a copy of the line drawing that shows hull profile for my D36. It’s helpful for sail/rig issues & provides all sail combination/sizes and rig dimensions. I’ve framed it and it hangs in my office for easy viewing; the cost was moderate ($15 & Postage). The plan # for the D36 drawn in 11/27/72 is #52-28.

    They were very nice folks….
    Hope this helps,

Excellent topic, Mike–thanks. I have a few other data points.

On behalf of the Dickerson Owners Association, a few of us are in the midst of preparing a museum exhibit to celebrate and preserve the rich history and traditions of these boats and the people who built them. In that process, we have talked with several museum curators and historians.

Last summer, I visited and talked with the librarian at the Calvert Marine Museum on Solomons Island, MD. They do hold the original Earnest Tucker design drawings as you cite. This includes the Dickerson 35, 36 and 41. The Calvert Museum holds them based on a personal relationship that existed with Mr. Tucker’s wife.

Over the past month, I talked with the Chief Curator of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St Michaels, MD who said that they were in negotiation with the Calvert Museum to have these plans transferred to them as a better home. Apparently, the CBMM has some Ted Graves drawings that include plans for the Dickerson “Simplissa” and perhaps the Dickerson 30 and 32s (I’m not absolutely certain about this).

Additionally, this year we have welcomed to our Association ranks, George Hazen, the designer of the Dickerson 37, so there is yet another source of information.

Finally, our group is talking with the Richardson Maritime Museum in Cambridge, MD as a potential home for our display. We will keep the membership informed as our work progresses. We are in search of the loan of any Dickerson models or unique artifacts for the final exhibit. Anybody has any–please contact me.

I am sure that everyone is aware that Dick Young has Dickerson 37 plans.

    Mike,

I missed this forum entry from July. I’m very interested in buying a D36 drawing. The date of the drawing was late 1972 which makes me think the drawings were for the fiberglass hulls. Bob Shelton has pointed out subtle hull differences between his FG hull and my wood hull. As an example, my bow is much fuller. Do you know if the drawings specify FG hull construction? Thanks, Malone

    Mike,

Let me rephrase my Shelton quote. Lothlorien has more freeboard than the FB D36. Bob tells me if the owner wanted more headroom or engine space then an extra plank or two could be added. Not so with FB hulls. Truly, a customized craft. Reminds me of jazz; centralized core theme with endless variations.

    Hi, fellow dickers,
My port Dickerson 41 fuel tank is leaking badly. I need to replace it. Before I start tearing the place apart, does anyone have the dimensions of the tank? Otherwise, we will be without fuel as I trashed the starboard tank in Columbia years ago. The weather down here in New Zealand is frightful to coin a phrase in this christmas season!

    anyway,
    Please?
