Mike AitkenParticipantA question:
I’m getting ready to run some new wires down the Mizzen & realized that the mizzen is filled with styrafoam..(the white stuff, like cheap paddleboards & coolers)…I thought that there was just a “cap” of foam on the end , but it seems that there is quite a bit of it in the mast….It’s pretty well formed to fit in the mast – almost looks like it was “foamed in place” somehow. Has anyone seen this on their own mast? If I start digging with a longer rod/bar, ect will I find that the foam is only a couple feet up the mast, or am I in for aggravation because the foam is the full length of the mast….This is a new one to me….foam in the mast. Go figure. Oh…the masts are “Metalmast” manufacture.
Thanks!

Al SampsonParticipantGuess it’s good I don’t have a mizzen mast! Try googling metalmast marine, it comes up with a link to Rig-Rite. It’s a RI Co. we knew the owner at one time. I would call them as they are listed as having to do with Metalmast. 401.739.1140

maloneParticipantFoam is used to quiet in- the- mast lines. Quick and dirty, if you do not want to install a track.

RainbowKeymasterThe styrofoam helps the righting of the boat if it capsizes. It’s in the main as well.

Love a guy with a sense of humor…..
I had a sailfish in the 70’s that had foam in the mast – definitely helped right the boat when it capsized. Perhaps I ought to put one of those big round foam balls on the top of each mast, kinda’ like the old Prindle cats, to make sure the masts don’t get stuck in the mud.
