Has anyone resealed the chain plates on the newer dickerson 37’s? The one in the galley locker is leaking and I will have to do something about it soon. Any secrets?

    Steve,
Does your boat have the SS chain plate covers? If so, it is easy to remove them, scrape out the old bedding and rebed. It is important to get the old dried out bedding out before applying new. I would suggest Sikaflex for this. I think the covers were a Schaefer Marine product. It is better to put too much bedding in and have to clean up the squeeze out rather than not have enough and have to do the job again.

Yes, they do have that plate cover. I have not opened it up to look at. Sikaflex seems to be the product of choice.

    Thanks,

    Steve,

Would like to “help” (observe/learn) if you are going to do this week or weekend. I found a good illustrated guide of the rebed by Don Casey. Looks very straight foward–using masking tape and “overfill” seems to be the secret. Send me a note or give me a buzz and I’ll join you.

Converted Crew Rest’s TV to digital (added a converter box and digital antenna) today. Now get 9 clear channels. What ARE my priorities?

If the temps cooperate I do plan on doing it this weekend. Dry of course too. Where did you put your TV? I attached mine on the port side chain plate. I love digital, Hi Def TV. I am looking at an AC unit this year too. Am considering a Carrier roof mounted on that I’ll permanently install on the hatch over the salon. Has heat too. I’ve seen a few of these types of units installed on sailboats and that way I don’t give up interior locker space and I don’t have to fiddle with a window unit like I have in the past.

    I’ll give you a call.

The TV on Crew Rest is located in the same position as yours although in the end I chose to retain the existing cathode ray tube unit (a small “under the kitchen cupboard” type). I had previously added a small DVD player and yesterday I added a digital to analog converter box and coax from the port locker recess back to an external outlet on the starboard coaming, I now plug in a digital antenna outside, lay that on deck and “ta da” pretty good reception.

Look forward to seeing you—Happy New Year.

    Barry,

Attached is a pic that shows how the antenna was mounted on ST. I was very lucky as I had the actual antenna from my Hans Christian so that was the only thing I changed. Amazingly good picture but does drop out when the wind is blowing.

What kind of work list do you have for the winter time? Mine is long, but it seems like most of it is spring time work instead of winter work. Winterized the fresh water system and changed the oil. Replaced all the port lite gaskets too. That was a job, cleaning all the old caulk out. Nice and dry so far.

I bought a really nice buffer and am planning on putting on a good shine this spring. It sure needs it, but I am sure it will buff out and glisten when I am done.

    Ready for Spring,

The reason of faliure of chain plate is crevice corrosion, where the chances of trapping of water at the deck penetration or behind the external plate. It should be free of this specific problem for obvious reasons. So, if visual inspection shows no cracks or elongated holes.

Something to think about…Using a quality butyl tape instead of caulk.

I’ve used it for most of my “fasten down” fixtures like cleats, windlass and stanchion bases over the years. It’s easy and quick (and I don’t have to use a whole tube of “goop” for one little item) and I’ve never seen it fail. For stuff like bedding down hatches or the toerails I’m re-setting, I’ll use sikka…by the tube.

Here is a link that gives a GREAT “how to” for butyl tape….He has lots of other “how to’s” on this site that are well worth the read.

I sold a bunch of GSO fiberglass backing plates to this guy last fall and had a delightful conversation about various “boat” projects & systems….he has a great how to on using a solar panel to keep batteries up to full charge. (he goes by “Mainsail” on line). Very nice guy & very knowlegeable about many boat related projects. He’s an independent ABYC contractor in southern/coastal Maine.
