Fleet CaptainKeymasterHey Steve!
Thought you had fallen off the end of the earth. Judy and I are planning to be out Saturday morning….let’s add a little class to Hampton Roads together?
But more importantly, how about we plan a weekend and meet Bob and Sarah in Mobjack Bay? You really need to see beautiful Aequaminitis.

Snoodle TimeParticipantI blew a head gasket on the 4th of July weekend and am hoping I will be up and running tomorrow. It has been a long and painful process. Doing the actual repairs to the head were not to bad, but it was tough getting the gasket kit from Weterbeke. Now if I can get my mechanic back tomorrow I should be in business.

Snoodle TimeParticipantBarry, I remember your boat having been repowered with a Yanmar engine. What model and year is that? I may be repowering myself, as the cylinder head is cracked. Wasted lots of money finding that out the hardway.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterHello All,
I answered Steve by separate email—but for the rest of you viewers (and not posters), Crew Rest’s last locomotion resort is a 55 hp Yanmar. The previous owner had done a very tidy repower and “Yanny” has just over 200 hours on the clock. I’m very pleased but know that Steve would greatly appreciate any thoughts/suggestions/recomendations on how he might proceed with Snoodle Time. Please post your thoughts as I am anxious to have him back out on the bay.

Mike AitkenParticipantHi Barry,
Sorry to hear about the engine issues…..argh…. The board has been quiet – boat is in the water….
You might be able to find a head (if it’s a 4-107 108) at TAD Diesel in Virginia – they seem to have a pretty good collection of Westerbeke parts. They do a lot of rebuild work of the perkins – same engine. I Know a fellow here in NH that has a 4-107 that ran a few years ago – he might be willing to sell the head for reasonable…Do you want me to check??
When I rebuilt my 4-107 I got all the gasket kits from TAD.Repower to another “brand” of engine opens up Pandora’s box – My brother repowered a Cal 39. Had a VW Pathfinder – in the process of dropping in a Yanmar 54 hp. New engine beds, new exhaust, new shaft/coupling, new prop……new filters ….$$$$

Fleet CaptainKeymasterThanks Mike,
It’s actually Steve and Snoodle Time with the engine issues–and I’m sure he appreciates your thoughts and will come up on the forum with a progress report.
Steve asked about Crew Rest because she was repowered (and “re-branded”) by a previous owner.

Rshel34ParticipantSteve,
Sorry to hear about your engine problems. Over the years I have had good luck with Trans Atlantic Diesel in Gloucester. They have a yard full of used diesels and you may possibly get a replacement head there. Also they are not too far from tidewater if you need to go see them. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.Bob S

Snoodle TimeParticipantWell, my mechanic had a head that will work on my boat he will sell me for $300. As it turned out, my head was not cracked, but rather the exhaust box was leaking antifreeze into the head through the exhaust ports and it pretty much let go on the 4th of July weekend. It has been a rather painful experience. He is replacing the head as mine did have quite a bit of pitting. So once the repairs on the exhaust box are complete, maybe I will have a running engine.
