Fleet CaptainKeymasterSteve,
This might be a diversion of subjects–but you mentioned the idea of a generator. I must admit that every time I visit Northern Tool, I look seriously at the portable Honda gas powered generator. Very quiet—and if it weren’t for the fact that it is gas powered—I think I’d add it to “Crew Rest’s” inventory. Be interested in any thoughts.
Also interested in why you think you need a watermaker. We find that water stowage is very adequate.

Snoodle TimeParticipantI bought the Honda at the boat show last year. I thought about adding solar panels and a wind generator, but the more I read about them the less confidence I have. I’ve read plenty of cruisers out there that say they can’t get much of a charge with the wind gen as when they are at anchor there is not much wind to generate voltage, and if there was they would be in a rocky anchorage. Solar can be hit or miss depending on the sun/clouds and if any hard shadows fall across the panel. If it does have a hard shadow it will not produce power.
Besides, I carry gas for the dinghy so what is a little more for the generator. Can tell you, it powers my shore charger at a moderate speed…. auto throttle…. and if I turn on my hot water heater (tried once) it powers that up too. IT is the 2000. It sits on the back lazzerette hatch and is relatively quiet back there.
I’m happy with the purchase. Beats spending thousands on alternative methods.

Rshel34ParticipantSteve and Barry,
I bought the 1000 model Honda generator several years ago at the Annapolis Boat show. I carry it any time we are going to be gone for more than a day. It is very quiet and sips very little gas. The unit is well built and sealed to minimize leakage of fumes. I sit it on top of the lazerett hatch so the breeze can blow any exhaust fumes away from the boat. I also carry a small can of gas on board and have never had any problems. SPRING WILL COME JUST AS SURELY AS THE RENDEZVOUS.Bob S.

stevechadduckParticipanti gotta say i really love this forum you guys are such a great source of info and your questions actually make me think about my decisions alot harder. that said i am definitely going with a portable gen, found a few that are about the size of a small suitcase, quite and come in both gas and diesel. as for the water-maker well my girl only has a 20 gal tank; me and my two teenage boys…doubtful that’s be adequate. now considering I’m not looking to be a weekend cruiser, basically the ole girl will be our summer home and we do plan on some extensive cruises over time (eventually we’re looking to sail from the east coast to as far as Hawaii). well you can see i need to set her up for the long hauls.
