Nauti LegalParticipantHello Everyone,
I have a 1974 36′ ketch. I’ve been under the impression that that it has a fiberglass hull, but looking at an old Documentation certificate (from the previous owner) it has the hull material listed as FRP…Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. Does anybody know anything about this or have any pros or cons on this matter. Also did Dickerson use this type of construction?
Thanks,
Shane

Rshel34ParticipantIt’s my understanding that fiberglass is the short term for Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP)

Nauti LegalParticipantThank you for the feedback Rshel34. Are there any Dickerson owners in the Florida east coast area?

Irish MistKeymasterHi Shane,
Great to hear from you and welcome to the Forum. I have a 35 Dickerson which is wood. Yours I believe is fiberglass over wood which is the way most 36 were made.
We do have a Lost Dickerson Contest and you are a Lost Dickerson since I do not find you listed in the 2009 Directory.
Check out the Home Page of the Directory for information on the contest and for membership information. We have a real good group of members who all love their Dickerson sail boats.
Barry Creighton–moderator on this web site– prepares the Dickerson Directory and will be in contact with you to get information on name of boat and other contact info.

Rshel34ParticipantMy 1978 36′ sloop has a Fiberglass hull. Deck and topsides are fiberglass over wood.

Nauti LegalParticipantI dont think that there is any wood in the hull as ive drilled throught it before and never saw wood shavings. Like Rshel34 it does have a glass over wood deck

Nauti LegalParticipantI spoke with a friend of mine who builds 100 mph+ offshore race boats and he agrees with Rshel34 that FRP is solid fiberglass panels or laminated fiberglass.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterAhoy Shane,
Welcome to the forum. Checking the 36′ Auxilary Ketch brochures, we find that Dickerson offered your boat either strip-planked or fiberglass at the buyer’s request. In the case of the fiberglass option, the hull is hand layed fiberglass and the topsides/cockpit and deck are 1/2″ marine plywood incased in fiberglass.
Joe passed along the picture of your boat that I’ll include in the 2010 Directory along with more complete information that I trust you will send along to me. I note a very unique custom cockpit surround. Rshel34 has beautifully restored every inch of his 36 and is a great source of info for us all.
I don’t have the info in front of me, but believe “Nauti Legal” was documented as “Soul Food” and “Wave Dancer” in her prior lives. There are several Dickerson’s in Florida–many listed in the DOA Members Directory.

Nauti LegalParticipantBarry, yes Nauti Legal was documented under the name Soul Food when I bought her. The name “Wave Dancer ” is news to me. Thanks for the info. What other info would you like me to send to you to go along with the picture?

Fleet CaptainKeymasterHi Shane,
Sorry for delay in answering—been out in the Midwest. I try to track: size, rig, boat name, sail nmber, year purchased, homeport, hull number, documentation number, owner name, address, phone numbers, email address, previous boat names, and previous owners.
BTW, previous owners were Lee Schwoerer and David Foley. The sister boat to yours is “Celeste” in Sturgeon Bar, IL.
Cheers,

Nauti LegalParticipantBarry,
You don’t happen to have a photo of “Celeste” do you?? Id love to see what she looked like prior to the cockpit enclosure.
Many Thanks,

Fleet CaptainKeymasterI’ll send you a few pics when I return to my regular computer this coming week.

Snoodle TimeParticipantBarry, We motored by the Old Point Marina today and looked for your boat, but alas we could not see her as we passed by. Yes, the motor is back in running condition… Yippy!!!! Now for the fall sailing season.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterTerrific News,
Quite frankly, it’s been a little steamy for us, so we are also looking foward to some great fall sailing. We’ll be hailing ya’ on the weekends.
