Does anyone have a suggestion for an insurance company that would cover my Dickerson 36? My boat is currently under restoration. I hope to find a company that would insure without a survey while I restore the boat. The blister repairs are nearly complete. However, I will need to address the wiring. The previous owner disconnected everything on the DC circuit except the bilge pump. I would prefer to do these repairs on the water in the marina since hill time is relatively expensive. Were I to have a survey done at this time it would show multiple deficiencies related to the wiring. Any suggestions appreciated.
In my experience you will not get insurance without a survey. The insurance companies always want them and there is not really anyway to get around that. So next question is the timing. I would think that when you get the blister job complete, and I’m assuming a barrier coat, starting then would be a good time to get one completed. At this point, I’d be looking for the cheapest guy around as you are not trying to beat up a seller.
As far as the wiring, I don’t think I would worry about that to much. Surveyors will make notations as what they recommend doing and after that the insurance company will contact you somehow and let you know what repairs they expect you to do quickly. Repairs are usually broken down into two or three groups from most critical to recommended.
Don’t argue with the insurance company and just say you will take care of the list. I’ve never had them come back and ask me if I completed all the repairs. If there is a loss, then they might.
