I have been using West Marines CPP Ablative paint for a number of years. So far it has been their cheaper paint. Bottom stays clean for as long as two years. When I haul out this spring the paint on the bottom will be three years old. My prop is another problem. I have to go under and clean the barnacles off every 6 weeks. Looks like Rainbow is wearing a larger Bulls eye this year.

    Steve and Barry,
I bought the 1000 model Honda generator several years ago at the Annapolis Boat show. I carry it any time we are going to be gone for more than a day. It is very quiet and sips very little gas. The unit is well built and sealed to minimize leakage of fumes. I sit it on top of the lazerett hatch so the breeze can blow any exhaust fumes away from the boat. I also carry a small can of gas on board and have never had any problems. SPRING WILL COME JUST AS SURELY AS THE RENDEZVOUS.

Steve, Congratulations on second in the Hampton parade. It really takes a lot to beat a Dickerson.

I have had a Mack Pack for a number of years. Zipping and un-zipping is not a problem. The zipper pull has a line attached that runs fore and aft and you can unzip or zip from anywhere along the boom The Mack Pack is very similar to the Stack Pack. Really makes handeling the main a piece of cake under all conditions.

question about being in our neighborhood in time for a departure north on the 16th. Would our neighborhood be the Piankatank at Deltaville or Mill Creek at Reedville? Will make a big difference on the destination on the 16th. Trying to do some last minute touch ups on the teak and get in some sailing practice at the same time. The days without rain have been great but for everyone of those we have been getting two with rain. I guess that’s spring. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

    Good morning Severance,

I am the owner of 1978 aft cockpit Dickerson 36. I have owned her for the past 12 years and so far have not had to take on any major repairs or upgrades. This past winter I did rebuild her water tanks that are under the forward “V” berths. Other than that it has just been the annual teak and paint upkeep. My wife and I have really enjoyed our Dickerson and spend at least 4 days out of the week aboard during spring, summer and fall. If at all possible you should try to drive up to Oxford, Md. next month for the annual Dickerson rendezvous. Nowhere else will you find as great a collection of classic Dickersons in one place at one time. You would be able to meet and talk with the owners and get ideas and first hand advice and experience for your rebuild. Good luck with your project and keep us advised of your progress.

    Barry,
Good luck on your initial sail of the 2010 season. One problem with your post though. Judy isn’t old enough to have been married for 4 decades. Rendezvouus time is getting close. We have to be Winston Salem on June 12th for a Grandson’s graduation from High School so we are going to be pushing it to get under way when I want to. Let us hear about your first sail.

We took our first sail of the season today. Winds were 10 to 15 and the sailing was great. Glad you are back in the water and ready to goi. Still have to do a quick haul in the near future to take care of the bottom.

It would be great to have all of you come to the Piankatank for a visit. We will be making a quick trip to the boatyard within the next week and then everything will be finished. We have a great anchorage on our creek and clean restrooms are available Let me know when you can come.

I just saw your popst concerning installation of a rudder sensor for your D37. I installed a Ray Marine Wheelpilot last year with the rudder sensor on my D36 sloop. The rudder sensor has to be mounted in the same plane as the rudder quadrant and off to one side.
There is a connecting rod from the rudder sensor to a small “tiller” that you mount on the quadrant. The problem I had was the fact that my quadrant is on a 30 degree slope so the sensor unit had to be mounted on the same slope and about 12 inches to one side of the center of the rudder post. I made up a platform that I could slide under the cockpit floor and attach in the proper position. The real difficulty was access for the mounting. I don’t have any pictures but next weekend I will bring my digital camera and see what I can do about getting some for you. Hope I’m not too late with this response.

    Hust,
Any time you want to take a trip down to Deltaville, let me know. I would like to meet you and show you my 36 (not for sale). If timing is right we may even be able to go out for a sail. I hope to have her ready to go within the next two weeks if all goes according to plan.

We went from Deltaville to Reedville on Tuesday. Met Barry Creighton and his group there for a shor visit. Wednesday we went from Reedville to Solomons. Very rough day. We laid over in Solomons for a day and left Friday morning for Oxford. My wife tends toward seasickness if the bay is too rough so I allow plenty of time so the trip is more pleasant for her. Coming back we went from Oxford to Solomons the first day and from Solomons to Deltaville the second day. That was about a nine hour day but a great day to be on the bay.

Congratulations on the new installation. I did this last year it has really made a difference. I find the autopilot can steer a lot better than I can most of the time. Last year when we left the rendezvous the autopilot steered all the way from Solomons to the entrance to the Piankatank river without my ever haveing to touch the wheel. There was no wind so we were motoring. I have had good results when there is wind setting the AP to sail by the wind angle as well as by a compass course. Sure makes life easy. Hope you will be able to make it to the Rendezvous this year. Enjoy your AP and look forward to meeting you this season.

    Hi Barry,
I haven’t had that problem yet, but due to crazing I discussed replacement of the lenses with the Bomar reps at the boat show. They pretty much said what you mention as far as removal. They also recommended using their sealant for re-sealing. The rep implied that it wasn’t a difficult project.

    Good luck
