I guess I won’t even tell you about yesterday’s sail. A friend, Eric, and I went out in the 15-20 knots of wind with full sails and romped around the Hampton flats waters. We sailed down to the mouth of the Elizabeth River, tacked our way to the Naval Station, crossed over to the southern M&M tunnel and ripped back to Hampton Creek. We were sailing over 7 knots most of the time. We were really moving, and heeling over too.

It was nice to be in the flat and protected waters south of the HRBT. Kind of spoils you when the winds are honking.

I have not hauled out yet… figured I would postpone it until my little situation clears up. Other than that, the boat is pretty well ready to go. I think we are going to sail over to Salt Ponds Saturday and anchor out there for a fleet 30 blessing of the fleet function. We did get out for a sail this past Saturday… the winds started out so light we just went out for a motor. We did not even rig anything to sail. Once we cleared the Hampton River, we saw a few other boats sailing, if slow, so I decided to set sail. We wound up having a really good first sail of the season and upon our return, caught a 15 knot gust of wind and popped us up to 7.2 knots of boat speed. The old girl still has it. Wind was about 60 degrees off the bow. We are also planning on doing an overnight trip to Portsmouth… will tie up to the basin at the end of high street over the mother’s day weekend. There is another fleet 30 function and of course the Gosport Art show. Should be another fun weekend.

Barry, Is there anyone else we may want to invite for a small rendezvous? Does not necessarily need to be Dickerson folks?

I figure it will be a few more weeks before the night time temperatures warm up enough where it will be comfortable to do an over night trip. Joel… you inspired the trip as I have never been there before. Looking forward to making the trip when the boats are ready and the weather cooperates.

Started oiling the interior teak. Anna and I got the main salon done before our eyes could not take the vapors any longer. I guess that is one of those jobs to do when it is warmer, but it needed it. Took a few days to dry, but what a difference it makes. Wow!!!

I’m not sure of my membership status. I did send a check in last year, and after about 6 months and the rendezvous, it was cashed. It seems like I should be current, but don’t really know.

I need to build a temp hatch board too so I can work on mine before it totally falls apart and is not repairable. The chain plate was surprisingly easy. On my Hans Christian I had the slot through the deck was so big, nothing I put in there really sealed the chain plate for long because it could flex so much while under sail. The Dickerson slot looked like a nice, tight fit, so cleaning out the old caulk took some time and then filled it in and put the cap on was the easy part. I’ve never seen a bevel in the cap like this one has before either. I thought that was a good idea as it would allow some build up of caulk to seal it with. I’m debating between a below deck AP and the new Raymarine wheel pilot. Not sure if I want to spend so much money on the really nice AP.

I did do the one that was leaking and got that sealed up. I am impressed with how Dickerson did the slot through the deck and the detail in the cover plate on top of the deck. I really can’t do much else until spring when the weather turns nicer. I bought a nice buffer to get down to business and make that hull glisten. Of course lots of teak touchups and I need to figure out how to rebuild my hatch board. It is loose and could fall apart at sometime. It’s tough when you don’t have good tools and no workspace.

What model of autopilot are you going to install? I have an older 4000+ (wheel mount) and it does not hold a course worth a hoot. I’ve been looking at their newest model, but have not decided to buy it yet….steve

It is a good idea to not let the spring maintenance list grow so long that it interferes with sailing. I almost did that last spring. This years list once it is out of the yard for bottom painting and hull buffing is much shorter.
