Irish MistKeymasterHi Docent,
Welcome to the classic Dickerson Boat Owners group. As a new Dickerson Owner we would like to invite you to read our Newsletter which is on this web site’s home page and join the Association. I have no record of “Docent” in the Dickerson Directory of Boat Owners and we would love to add your information to our 2011 Directory which our Commodore Barry Creighton is now putting together. Barry will be contacting you for the desired information.
I have a 35 ft wooden Dickerson built in 1968 “Irish Mist”
Looking forward to hearing from you

Irish MistKeymasterHi Steve, Barry and Tessanna,
I like the idea about having a co coordinator from Walter Reed’s Wounded Warriors Program. The fact that there is really no sailing initative for these veterans raises the question of what should be the basic ingredients of the program. It would seem that to be at all worth while the program would have to go far beyond our small Dickerson group and include othe Bay Sailing groups of which there are many that do a lot of day sailing.. I know that SpinSheet publishes a crew list you can contact if you are interested. I wonder if they could help to put together an initative that would list potential sailors from different organizations and Handicap Veterans interested in learning about sailing. Maybe we could discuss this at the Rendezvous.

Irish MistKeymasterHi Mike and Barry
Several yrs ago I had wire jump out of the quandrant while leaving a dock in Annapolis. Did manage to put it back on after an hr or so.
Just before wire enters quadrant on Stb side put a block on wire with turnbuckle attached to fwd partial bulkhead. This keeps tension on wire so it does not jump off quadrant.
Works fine

Irish MistKeymasterThanks Steve and Barry,
It was a lot of fun writing it–and Frank Sherman–a super guy really enjoyed it. The sad thing was that Bill, mentioned in the article, passed away in his sleep at 58 in January. He lived on the Houseboat next door to Irish Mist and helped Frank at the Marina and Barry Bill went up my mast on a ladder and replaced nuts in spreaders–that had fallen off–so we could race in the Western Shore Round Up..
Bill’s ashes were buried at sea in a very memorable ceremony with some 50 relatives and friends aboard the Charter boat “Loosen UP” A very moving ceremony with people coming from as far as Texas to pay tribute.
Coming from New England I can truthfully say–There is nobody like “Bay Water people”
Irish MistKeymasterHi,
I talked to a Marine Surveyor and he said there is no easy answer. On boats like Irish Mist he has seen bronze keel bolts OK after 50 years and some boats with Stainless Steel he has seen problems after 10 years. A lot depends on the construction and the quality of the metal. He said you need to worry if you see the wood sofetning or getting powdery around the keel bolt.

Irish MistKeymasterHi Nancy,
Great to hear from you sharing your fond memories of Restless and to have you as a member on the Dickerson Web Site. We have a very active group and would love to have you join us at the Annual Dickerson Rendezvous in Oxford the weekend of June 18, 2010. We will e mail you a copy of the reservation form.
A wooden Dickerson does have a lot of soul and memories. I have owned Irish Mist, built the same year as your Restless for 28 years and am just finishing up the painting for this year. Amazing the boat does not leak a drop and still sails great.
Check out our Newsletter on this site and join us as an Associate Member. How about writing an article for our July News Letter on Memories of My Wooden Dickerson Restless.
Great talking to you and keep in touch

Irish MistKeymasterAl, Thanks for your note. What size in microns are your filters. Mine next to the engine is 2 microns. The Perkins filter/water separator consists of two elements each 3x 5 inches 12 microns. Still zero Vacuum today–first start of engine.

Irish MistKeymasterJohn,

Irish MistKeymasterHi Restless Jim,
Great to have you on the Forum. I have a woodie 35 built in 1968. I used to paint the sides every year using Petit or interlux, But then made a good move by having sides painted with Awlgrip by a good painter. He did 2 coats and all I have done for 15 years is touch up. Last year I sanded it slightly and painted it with a light coat of Petiti using a roller. Did the whole sides in less than .5 hrs. Used a foam roller..
Sides still look great.
Paint bottom every 2 years with cleaning off years.
Where is your boat. We want to include you in our Dickerson boat Directory. Hope you can join DOA and would love to have you in our 35 race in our Oxford Rendezvous June 18-20. Check it out on the Web Site.
All the Best

Irish MistKeymasterHi.
I fixed the frozen sea cock so now I won’t have to haul in the spring to work on a stuck sea cock and I can take Irish Mist out for just a few hours before next years Dickerson Rendezvous race to just clean and put mystery wax on the bottom to get ready for Rainbow.
Last week to try and free the stuck sea cock on the head discharge–I used WD 40 and PB Blaster and with a big wrench and some hammering the sea cock still would not budge. My son in law who is a machinist mentioned Aero Kroil which he thought was great. Could not find it at an auto or hardware store so I went on the Internet and through google found the special offer of two king size 13 ounce Aerasol cans for the price of one ($12.00) with free shipping. I received the cans yesterday and went to Irish Mist today to see if it would do any good and to do more winterizing.
I first tried a wrench and hammer on the sea cock. It did not budge. I loosened the nut on the back side and then spayed the Aero Kroil over both the front end and into the end of the tapered plug on the back –.behind the loose nut. As I sprayed I tapped the sea cock with a hammer hoping that would help. Nothing changed–I was not optimistic.
I worked on installing my ice-eater and some other things for about two hours and before going home decided to put a wrench on the small sea cock handle to see if it would move. I couldn’t believe it–it moved and I was able to close it. In fact after moving it back and forth several times I was able to turn it easily. Even though I am not too worried about freezing in Deale MD I feel much better with closed sea cocks during the winter.
I highly recommend Aero Kroil for stuck sea cocks. It is made by Kano Laboratories. http://www.kanolabs.com/google for their special offer or tel 1 866 487 7245

Irish MistKeymasterHi Barry,
You know the Irish Mist would never think like that. But one does have some intersting thoughts when beating on a stuck sea cock leaning over the head. Maybe it is just fate that detemined I stop using the hamer and wrench and haul and get a smooth bottom and a chance to compete against Rainbow.
