The dimension from the bottom of the keel to the deck would vary from about 6ft 6inches in the center of the boat to about 8 ft at the bow and stern

Look for a boat company that has trucks that might need a load to get home. Should find one shopping on the Internet.

    Hi Al,

I do not usually get barnacles on the prop. I use a hard epoxy Interlux Bottomcoat

Am switching to ablative Blue Water

I have been talking to several people to get more comments on this subject.

One comment from a Dickerson sailor who keeps his boat on the Chesapeake North of Baltimore was that he uses an ablative paint and has not cleaned his bottom for 3 years. Maybe the water is brackish where the boat is docked,  but this seems unusual especially when that boat is clearly fast and winning races. Some of us are cleanning the bottom once a month or certainly before every Dickerson race.

Let us know of your experience

Here is a comment I received by e mail from a Dickerson Sailor. I would be interested in hearing from others on type of bottom paint you use, how often do you clean the bottom and where do you keep your Dickerson. Thanks

    Hey Joe,

This is a tough one and there probably isn't a perfect solution.  Every location seems to have it's own challenges — mine might be the most difficult as we have very salt water/
tenacious barnacles and persistent slime.  To combat these factors, I haul every other year/ use two coats of ablative paint and contract a diver every 6 weeks.  That combination seems to balance the amount of growth, and the durability of the bottom paint (at two years, it's gone).
If I used hard paint, I'd need a diver more frequently and even sailing more frequently with the ablative paint would not obviate the need for the diver.  So you have to figure the balance.

I use West Marine PCA ablative paint (made by Petit), but I really don't think that there is a good “paint and forget” solution.  And to make matters more complicated, don't forget that the propellor is important.

    Hi

I have had many problems with leaking portholes and find overtime they get distorted and gasket replacement does not work.

I just came across porthole rain shields or visors made by Seaworthy Goods. They look great. Feature is that they fit over outside of porthole and you can even open portholes in the rain.

Take a look at their web site.  http://commutercruiser.com/solving-the-rainy-day-puddling-porthole-dilemma/

I will try them and let you know. But their wide number of users see very satisfied

    Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for your note. How are you making out with the Dickerson. Where is it located. We would like to include it in our Directory. Can you obtain the name of the present owner. Is it a boat yard. A boat yard has to get a title to the boat in Maryland State if it intends to destroy it.

    Good Luck

    Good Morning Jimmy,

There are a number of Dickersonians who own wooden boats and some are better carpenders than others. I have a 35 wooden ketch Irish Mist and have owned it for 32 years. The fact that you are a carpenter helps a lot.

If you send me the name of the boat and contact information I will circulate it to owners of wooden boats who will be more than glad to load you up with good advice. In fact one owner may have a set of spreaders

Also we would love to have you join the Dickerson Owners Association so you can receive our new hot off the press Dirctory that gives contact information for over 100 owners plus a new yellow pages section on where you can buy parts and supplys

Looking forward to hearing from you

She was built in 1969 for Charles and Lynn Stearns as you can see from Building a Dickerson on the Home Page. They sold her in 1982 to a John and Caroline Schultz don’t know anything beyond that. Who donated the boat to you. and where do you keep it.

As I said before she looks great

    Hi Steve,

In order to get things going we need someone to make it happen as Crew Rest pointed out. Since it is your idea it is logical for you to be the coordinator. If you give me an article I will put it in the next News Letter. The article should name the coordinator and try to recruit sailors to participate in the program. No reason this couldn’t be conducted so you could do it at one or two or more ports a year. Maybe for example you could have an event mixing some social event like lunch at Cantlers on Mill Creek, Annapolis, with a couple hrs sailing. Interested owners could show up with their boats. Could also do it in Oxford day before or day after Rendezvous.

Please take charge and give me an article

Congratulations on your new Dickerson. Are you interested in old sails if so there are probably several owners like me that have old sails they have never used for a long time. A good place for used sails is Bacons in Annapolis. Tel is 410 263 4880

Send me your e mail so can add you to our mailing list unless you already are getting it. Would love to have you join our very active Dickerson Owners Association
