Fleet CaptainKeymasterWow,
Alrighty boys and girls, I think we have just validated all the claims about this being a special group of sailors and boats.
So, Bahama Don—if you think you can part with “Restless” after reading Nancy’s affection for her–then Hust (see other thread) is looking for her.
Nancy—thanks for joining us—we would love to meet you in Oxford!
Fleet CaptainKeymasterGreen–Envy–Green–Envy–Green–Envy–Green–Envy
Soon!
Fleet CaptainKeymasterHust,
From member Mike Aitken in New England—-
“I saw what may be wonderful value for a person looking for a Dickerson.. A Dickerson Ketch listed on Cape Cod (Massachusetts) Craigs list. Looks like a fiberglass 36 foot ketch (they are calling it a 35 – but the hull is glass)- aft cabin. Supposedly engine works, sails, rigging ect with the boat. Needs deck/cabin work. If it’s a glass boat it’s a darn good value for $2,000. Pictures are posted on CraigsList.
The phone # is 508-237-9852 & ask for Erin. Gee, wonder if there is room in my yard – a spare for IRIS?????? I’ll have to ask Una.”Might be just what you are looking for

Fleet CaptainKeymasterSorry,
My tired old eyes.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterHurst,
I think you have given us a “wake-up call”. Our web information does indeed need updating for 2010. Our membership committee will get right on that.
Information starts at the main home page http://dickersonowners.org/
From there you can navigate around and get a taste for our activities. The annual Rendezvous is a Friday/Saturday event over Fathers’ Day weekend in Oxford. Social Friday evening—“race” on Saturday morning, and social/dinner on Saturday evening. Many boats join for additional cruising before and/or after. In recent years, boats from New England, Maryland, Virginia, and returnees from the Caribbean have joined in. Please follow the links to stories and pictures.
Additionally, in the fall, some boats have participated in a “western shore round-up” with a similar agenda.
We’ll be getting a new “joining” form posted shortly and with “stagflation” I suspect your membership fee will remain a “very affordable” $25. For that, you will get “bragging rights”, a newly formulated member/boat directory, and great friendship.
OK, DOA members, let’s find Hurst a boat!

Welcome back “home” to your “Dickerson Family”. You should get some good conversation here. Over the past few years–I’ve tried to collate informatiion for the DOA and I’m certain that several forum members will chime in. In fact, your boat was “Talisman” when Hank and Helen sailed her to victory in the 1973 and 1975 annual races to become DOA Commodore those years.
In addition to Dickerson 35, 36, 37, 40-41s, and 50s–we know of 4 30s and 7 32s still actively sailing. Unfortunatley, there isn’t a stable of Dickersons for sale at the moment.
I predict that “Irish Mist” and “Rainbow” will join the conversatiion to talk about 35s and “Aequanimitas” will join to talk about the Piankatank.
We all highly recommend that you attend the annual Rendezvous in Oxford 18-19 June (info on this site).
Cheers,
Barry
Fleet CaptainKeymasterTom,
Sending you a personal email.

Fleet CaptainKeymasterHi Steve,
As Bob hints, the weather last year was pretty challenging–“she came up a couple of good blows”. My schedule is a bit boxed in owing to the availabilty of friends/crew who fly up from FL to go with us each year. Last year we left on Tuesday, and as Bob says, we made it all the way to Mill Creek on the Wicomico to meet up with Bob and Sarah–wonderful time on the hook. Wednesday, we pounded to windward and made it to the Tred Avon–a long day–another night on the hook. Thursday then became a “cushion day” so we went up the Choptank to the Cambridge Marina (our home town). Spent the night there seeing family, then back down the Choptank on Friday to join up a flotilla inbound to Oxford.
We left early Sunday morning dead into a strong westerly and seas. Turning south, we were the only boat on the Bay—-but we were hauling! Whatever hull speed is–we were beating it. Made it back to Mill Creek easily, then a nice long day back to Hampton Roads.
So each way can be done in two long days (all daylight)–but I would sure like to take some more time and smell the seaweed.
Getting pumped. Hope to get the sails back on Saturday. Give me a hail if you make it out.
Barry
Fleet CaptainKeymasterCongrats Steve!
Big project! You might remember that I replaced my underdeck linear actuator a couple of winters ago. Not much room to work under there. I must admit that my Simrad system does a little too much “wandering” for me while under sail and trying to maintain apparent wind angle—but no matter, it’s still great.
So you beat me out this year. Just picked up my sails from the loft—should actually have a Dickerson logo this year. (I haven’t seen it yet–so who knows.)
Really looking forward to a great year and particularly the Rendezvous. We’ll sail up and pick up Bob in the Piankatank. Come to think about it, a couple of years ago I almost went aground doing a compass calibration up there.
See you soon,
Barry
Fleet CaptainKeymasterDana,
Notice you have changed vessel name to True North and hailing port to Annapolis (according to USGC data base). I have made those changes to our DOA records. Glad to see you tackling the “mucky projects” first. See you at the rendezvous.
Fleet CaptainKeymasterAl,
This is terrific news. Wanderlust and crew will add a touch of “Bristol Class” to the Rendezvous. I’m certain that you will get some real interest as we get closer to the date. If the winds are fair and you have a hankering for sailing to the mouth of the Bay—-you are always welcome to join us in the flotilla north. Gonna be a great time.
Barry
Fleet CaptainKeymasterThanks Bob and Al,
In my case, the crazing isn’t driving the project—it’s actually the seal around the lens. So, thanks for encouraging me. I’ll give the Bomar folks a call and dive in.
Fleet CaptainKeymasterI trust that all you faithful DOA members and web site voyeurs are following along with Eric and Jackie’s adventures ?? What fun! While some of us are happy to sail around the local cans, others are pretty assured in the confines of the Chesapeake, it is some how very comforting to know that “Plover” and “Hemisphere Dancer and “Compass Rose” are perfictly happy out there where “respect the sea” are the watchwords.
These are indeed fine boats, my friends. Merry Christmas from Hampton Roads.
Fleet CaptainKeymasterAhoy Compass Rose,
Really enjoying your blog and sharing it with friends. Please keep it up as some of us want to be just like you when we grow up.
Barry
Fleet CaptainKeymasterHi Bob,
Believe me–it is worth the price of admission. To see these two wonderful (and pretty evenly matched) boats go head to head is better than the America Cup. And
when you cut through the rhetoric, these two skippers really know what they are doing (although there was some doubt a couple of years ago when the entire fleet started to starboard and “Irish Mist” disappeared to port in search of the “private breeze”). Unfortunately, it didn’t work this time, but I understand it has worked before in Cap’n Joe’s half century of sailing–and what the heck–it’s the grist of great songs. It was a bittersweet day here in Hampton Roads today as Judy and I wrestled the sails from Crew Rest’s spars (they’re not getting any lighter). But I will deposit them in David Baxter’s loft tomorrow for an inspection and repair. Think I will even abandon my “stealth persona” and have him put the Dickerson emblem and my sail number on the main. Guess, I’d like “Imagine” to know who’s overtaking her in 2010. So, the winterizing is almost complete, I have a manageable “to do list”, and most importantly, the entire Crew Rest crew has “checked in” and committed to the Rendezvous. It doesn’t get any better than this.
As this is Thanksgiving weekend, let Judy and me express our thanks for all of you–the Dickerson family.
Barry
